Biography
Gregg spent his early life in the suburbs of Philadelphia playing jazz and classical guitar. He was born at Ft. Ord, CA and his mother frequently spoke of California and how things might have been different had he grown up there. She left Steinbeck’s Cannery Row and Grapes of Wrath on his nightstand for him to read and get an idea of early California.
After graduating from Penn State with a degree in accounting, Gregg did a four year tour in the Navy on the USS Enterprise and eventually made his way to San Francisco. He played solo and duet acoustic folk guitar in coffee houses and restaurants around the City and then spent a few years performing traditional bluegrass music with several local bands. In 1986 he obtained a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Theory from San Francisco State, where he became close friends with Dr. Byron McGilvray and sang and toured internationally with the McGilvray Chorale.
Gregg completed the Master’s in Songwriting program with Boston’s well known Berklee College of Music. His contemporary influences are Lyle Lovett, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews and John Mayer. Gregg plays solo acoustic 6 and 12 string guitar locally in Marin County. Gregg’s ‘daytime job’ is senior systems engineer at a well known, excellent mid sized bank in San Francisco.
